Kingdom of Aksum Adopts Christianity

King Ezana of the Aksumite Empire converted to Christianity around 330 CE, making Aksum one of the earliest states to officially adopt Christianity—before even the Roman Empire. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church traces its origins to this period and remains one of the oldest Christian institutions in the world.

Commodore Perry Opens Japan

On May 17, 1875, Oliver Lewis, an African American jockey, won the first running of the Kentucky Derby aboard Aristides. In that inaugural race, 13 of the 15 jockeys were Black. African Americans dominated early horse racing in America.
